Bollywood Movie Raanjhanaa banned in Pakistan

New Bollywood movie Raanjhanaa has banned shortly before it’s scheduled to release. The film banned by the Central Board of Film Censors in Pakistan (CBFC) for its controversial plot. According to the sources the Anand L Rai’s Raanjhanaa film was scheduled to release during the last week of June but its ban due to the issue of Muslim girl Zoya (Sonam Kapoor) getting married to Hindu boy Kundan (Dhanush). Central Board of Film Censors has also banned previously some Indian movies such as Agent Vinod, Ek Tha Tiger and G.I Joe for anti-Pakistan opinion. The film music composed by AR Rehman and Pakistani singer Shiraz Uppal has also delivered his voice for the title of the film Raanjhanaa. Raanjhanaa grossed INR 1.31 billion in its second week of release.

The importer of Raanjhanaa and Chief Executive Officer of IMGC Global Entertainment Amjad Rasheed said: I received a letter from CBFC with directives to shelve the film’s release. “The letter from CBFC states that the film portrays an inapt image of a Muslim girl [played by Sonam Kapoor] falling in love with a Hindu man and having an affair with him.”

Story of Raanjhanaa

The film story describes that Muslim girl named Zoya (played by Sonam Kapoor) falling in love with Indian boy Kundan (played by Dhanush) and afterward another Indian boy Jasjeet Singh (played by Abhey Deol). Kundan is the son of Hindu pundit. He falls in Love of Zoya at first sight. He follows Zoya everywhere she goes. Kundan finally knows her name after receiving 16 slapped. Kundan introduce himself as Rizwan (Muslim) because he hesitates that she will reject him due to the religion difference. But the lie expose soon when they meet behind a temple and Zoya finds out that Kundan is a Hindu boy.

After sometimes Zoya also develop feelings for Kundan. However, Zoya parents identify soon about her affair and send her to Delhi in order to protect the family honour. Afterward in Delhi, Zoya falls in love with another Indian boy Jasjeet Singh. Jasjeet Singh leads a political party and also a student leader.

  1. What exactly does the CBFC mean by “an inapt image of a muslim girl”? They should let the viewers judge that for themselves and also decide for themselves whether the plot was realistic or not. The CBFC should stick to certifying films, not banning them.
